This evening the gentlemen of choir sang compline. A very beautiful, very simple service, bringing an end to the day. At St John’s we only hold this service in Holy Week. Unusually, the organ voluntary both at the beginning and the end are part of the service, listened to in quiet reflection after the choir enter and before they depart.
I was privileged to play the Postlude on an Old Irish Church Melody to open the service, appropriate as Lent started with St Patrick’s Day. At the end Chris played Psalm-Prelude Psalm 34 v6 by Herbert Howells and it was a beautiful finish to the service. It seemed to echo the sentiments of the whole service and the church perfectly.
