I’ve had a day off today. There is no music in the Cathedral on a Wednesday. So this morning I had a lazy start and enjoyed a fabulous breakfast in our hotel including full English, pancakes and cereal! I then did a bit of shopping in Guildford, which I think has become my favourite shopping location. I even found a fabulous ‘little black dress’ which I can play the organ in!
We then went to Hatchlands.
I went a few years ago and toured the house with Baba, my Grandpa. The Cobbe Collection is housed there, which is a private collection put to Alec Cobbe of amazing keyboard instruments. Owners include Marie Antoinette, Chopin and George IV, whilst others have been played by Handel, Liszt and Bizet. Sadly as it’s a private collection you’re not allowed to play any of them or photograph them, but the collection is worth looking up.
At the end of the tour there is an organ owned by the National Trust which you can play. An organ association were visiting and I enjoyed hearing some of the group play and then I had a turn. My Mum wasn’t able to record it, but we did get a picture (with permission).
We headed back to our hotel and enjoyed some down time before dinner. Tomorrow I have another exciting day at the Cathedral which I’m really looking forward to. More to learn, more to play and more to hear.
